Canadian Rotary Club supports WASH in Kenyan Schools

New Latrine

In 2010-2011 the Rotary Club of Stoney Creek, Ontario, Canada (District 7090) initiated financial assistance to Connecting Countries Adopt-a-School, a registered Canadian Charitable Organization based in Hamilton, Ontario. The primary purpose of Connecting Countries is to provide latrines for primary schools in the Ol Joro Orok/Nyahururu of Western Kenya as replacements for the current aging, poorly constructed and highly unsanitary facilities. Of prime importance is the safeguarding of children’s health against fecal borne diseases. Very important also, especially for girls, is the dignity and confidence afforded by cubicle doors and by concrete block walls, known as blinders, which shield the fronts of latrines from view. Girls are now much more willing to attend school knowing that their privacy and self-respect will be safeguarded. Connecting Countries is working with 9 Kenyan Primary Schools and their administrations to accomplish these ends. So far more than 92 latrines serving over 3,000 Kenyan students during each school year have been built. Additionally, a large number of students representing 13 schools in Canada and 9 in Kenya continue to share cultural information and ultimately build personal relationships through a regular exchange of pen pal letters.

  1. As a member of the Rotary Club of Stoney Creek, we love that we can support projects that improve the lives of citizens right across the globe. Thank you to Connecting Countries Adopt-A-School for making such a big difference in Western Kenya.

  2. Our Rotary Club (Sunshine Coast BC Canada) supports water and literacy projects in the drought & famine prone area of Ndandini in Eastern Kenya. We would love to have more Rotary Clubs partner with us in the successful work that has been done and that we are still doing. More information at:
