PRESENTATION OF THE DISTRICT 9102

In March 2011, the international rotary took a daring decision which is to divide the rotary district 9100 which was composed of 14 countries in West Africa into two groups from 1st of July 2013. The district 9101 composed of different countries such as, Burkina Faso, Carpe Verde, Ivory Coast, Gambia, Guinea Bissau, Guinea, Liberia, Mali, Sierra Leone, Senegal; and our district, district 9102 composed of countries like, Benin Republic, Ghana, Niger, and Togo. This district which has been in existence not long ago has 66 clubs and 1900 Rotarians (both men and women).

SOCIO ECONOMICAL OVERVIEW OF THE DISTRICT 9102

This district which is composed majorly of the poor countries in West Africa is unfortunately very poor. That is the case of my country, Benin Republic with an area of 114.763 km2 with a population of 9,352,000 inhabitants. Poverty in Benin has got to an alarming level. We do notice some families that cannot even afford at least one meal per day. In the Northern region for example we do observe some that do not have where to sleep.

If we refer to the six (06) missions of the districts such as, peace and prevention/resolution of conflicts; prevention of diseases; water and sanitation, health of the mother and the child; literacy and education ; economic and local development, we can realize many projects together.

Concerning treatment prevention of diseases we can assist most of the medical centre that do not have elementary equipments to diagnose or administer the primary cares to the patients. By doing so, we would help reducing the rate of mortality with the mother and the child.

Literacy rate is actually the lowest in the whole world and is becoming a threat to the world because uneducated children are forced to accomplish hard domestic chores and do some illicit acts. With your contribution, we can increase the rate of literacy and thereby allow a brilliant future for the kids.

The problem of water is not to banish because access to water is not a simple task to the population.

Regarding all these problems, as Rotarians we cannot remain indifferent, we must react.

This is the reason of the creation of the “Hospital Saint Jean de Dieu”. This hospital is located in the north of the country and the only one in the sub region. Even if we don’t have money we must save human life.

We started with ten (10) beds and today we are at three hundred (300) beds and about five hundred (500) patients permanently admitted. People do come to us with no money. More than 50% of our patients come from our borderlands such as, Nigeria, Togo, Burkina Faso, Niger, etc…

We have about fifteen thousand (15000) admitted patients and fifty thousand (50000) consultations. In pediatrics we have about five thousand (5000) kids admitted per year. And we do take care of the feeding (breakfast, lunch and dinner) of the patients and their companions.

I would like to notify that a report titled Miracle of Tanguiéta was made by France 2 television last year.
